WINDSURFING TAS CODE OF CONDUCT/RECOMMENDATIONS

Windsurfing is a load of fun and can be undertaken in relative safety provided participants follow some common sense guidelines:

1. It is the users responsibility to check windsurfing equipment before each use, particularly the mast joint, boom joint, condition of ropes, and condition of the fin and centre board connections.

2. Never place yourself in a position were breakage of any component would pose a risk to yourself and others, or make it impossible to return to shore safely and unassisted, so, take time to study the conditions including sea state , tides, currents and weather forecasts before deciding to go sailing. Be particularly aware of offshore or cross/offshore winds which make returning to shore unassisted difficult or impossible.

3. Familiarize yourself with local conditions before venturing out. Ask locals as to any hazards. Check the Windsurfing Tasmania Website for information and the link to the spot guide for information on popular windsurfing locations in Tasmania: http://www.windsurfing.org/tas.htm

4. Beware conditions can change very rapidly and you can become cold and fatigued extremely quickly. Always return to the shore when there is a significant change of conditions e.g . change in wind direction/strength.

5. Watch out for other beach users. Keep your rig under control at all times and don’t get blown about on the beach or in the water

6. Wear a personal flotation device (PFD) and a wetsuit, but the decision to wear a PFD and wetsuit is a matter of personal choice.

7. Do not allow minors to use windsurfing equipment without supervision.

8. In respect to encounters with other waterborne craft, beware of the general right of way rules for sailors.

9. Make sure someone knows where you have gone and when you are expected back. Never sail alone.

10. Always sail within your own limitations. It is recommended that beginners take lessons.
